P-M test is a common method to test the alkalinity in the water based mud. Mud alkalinity and filtrate alkalinity are results of the presence of bicarbonate, carbonate, and hydroxides, of calcium magnesium, sodium and other cations. Alkalinity is determined by titrating a sample with standard sulfuric acid with a pH indicator to determine the endpoint.
